Some categories are volumetric by nature. Cushions, soft toys, lampshades, pet beds, insulated bottles, anything with a hollow. For these, volumetric weight is not an occasional surprise — it is always the billed weight, and pricing has to be built around it.

Accept the arithmetic first

A 40×40×40 cm cushion is a 12.8 kg parcel. There is no carrier where that is cheap, and no negotiation that changes the geometry. Sellers who price these as “a 500 g product” lose money on every order, quietly, for months.

The four things that actually work

1. Compress it. Vacuum bags on cushions and pet beds routinely take a 40×40×40 box to 35×30×15 — from 12.8 kg volumetric to 3.15 kg. This is the single biggest lever in the category and it is a packaging decision, not a logistics one.

2. Flat-pack it. If the product can ship disassembled, it should. A lampshade that ships flat and clips together at home is a fraction of the volume.

3. Find a 6000-divisor service. The divisor is contractual. The same parcel on a 6000 divisor is 10.67 kg instead of 12.8 kg — a 17% cut for a phone call. Not every carrier will, but it is worth asking, and it is a rarely used negotiating lever.

4. Price it into the product. If the parcel genuinely costs ₹340 to deliver, that belongs in the price or in a category-specific shipping charge. Absorbing it into a national free-shipping threshold set for 600 g parcels is how a well-selling SKU turns out to be unprofitable.

Watch the damage trade-off

Compression and flat-packing raise damage and assembly-complaint rates. Measure both. A ₹340 saving that produces a 6% damage rate on a ₹1,200 product is not a saving.
