Multi-Piece Shipments: How Weight Is Billed Across Boxes

An order that will not fit in one box raises a question with a non-obvious answer: are you billed on the total, or on each box?

The general rule

For standard parcel services in India, each piece is a shipment. Three boxes means three AWBs, three chargeable weights and three applications of the rate card — each starting at the base slab.

This matters because the base slab is the expensive part of a card. Three parcels of 400 g each pay three base rates. One parcel of 1.2 kg pays one base rate plus two additional steps, which is usually less.

Consolidating usually wins on dead weight.

But volumetric flips it

Consolidation only wins if the combined box is not much bigger than the sum of its parts — and it usually is, because a box that holds three items has empty space and thicker walls.

Here splitting is dramatically cheaper. The right answer is per-order arithmetic, not a policy.

The rule that holds

• Dense goods (books, hardware, liquids): consolidate. Dead weight dominates and you save the repeated base rate.
• Bulky goods (apparel, soft goods, anything with air in it): split. The consolidated box’s volumetric weight will exceed the sum of the parts.

Operational cost of splitting

Three AWBs is three chances of a partial delivery, three tracking threads and a customer who receives one box on Tuesday and two on Friday. Set the expectation in the shipping confirmation, or you turn a cost saving into a support load.

Is one AWB possible for a multi-box order?

Some carriers support a multi-piece booking with a parent AWB and child pieces. Availability varies; ask specifically, because it is much better for the customer experience.

Will splitting an order cost more?

On dense goods yes, on bulky goods often no. Compute the volumetric weight both ways before deciding.

How do I stop customers panicking about a partial delivery?
