Shipping Zones in India, and Why Your Carrier Disagrees With Your Map

Weight gets the attention, but zone is decided first and it multiplies everything after it. The same 500 g parcel can cost ₹32 or ₹96 depending only on where it is going.

The five zones

Price climbs A through E. Zone E is not a small premium: it commonly runs 2–3× Zone A on the same weight, and transit times roughly double.

Why two carriers zone the same lane differently

A zone is not a geographic fact. It is a statement about how hard a lane is for that carrier’s network. A carrier with a hub in Guwahati treats the North East very differently from one that trucks everything from Kolkata.

So a lane can be Zone D on one carrier’s card and Zone E on another’s, and both are correct. This is also why a rate comparison that assumes one zone table for everybody is misleading — you have to price each carrier in the zone it puts the lane in.

The mistake that costs real money

Pricing a lane in a zone that the carrier has no rate row for. If the system falls through to “the cheapest matching slab in any zone”, you get a number that looks fine on the quote screen and a completely different one on the invoice.

A billing path should refuse to price an unpriced lane rather than guess at it. If your platform quotes ₹116 and bills ₹176, this is usually why.

Practical consequences

• Charge shipping by zone, not a flat national rate, or Zone E orders quietly fund themselves out of your margin.
• Check zone coverage before you promise a delivery date. Zone E transit is typically 5–9 days, and no amount of carrier escalation compresses it.
• Watch the boundary lanes. Metro-to-metro is usually cheaper than metro-to-nearby-town, which surprises people the first time they see it.

Zone A, local. Same-city delivery is usually the lowest rate on any card and the fastest transit, often same or next day.

Why is Delhi to Guwahati so much more expensive than Delhi to Chennai?

Chennai is Zone C, metro to metro, on a dense trunk route. Guwahati is Zone E, where the network is thinner, the line-haul is longer and the return leg is often empty. Carriers price that difference into the card.

Do zones affect COD charges too?

The COD fee itself is usually zone-independent — it is a function of order value. But the freight it is added to is not, and GST applies to the total, so a Zone E COD order is more expensive on all three lines.
